I think this was the first essential Eurythmics cd of the 80s. The first release was rather lackluster and acoustic. This release was responsible for their first top 40 hit in the states. And it marked the beginning of a love affair with America that lasts to this very day.
Annie Lennox is an exciting vocalist. She's got amazing expression and Dave Stewart can write some off beat interesting songs that lend themselves perfectly to her style. They're an interesting duo. This is another one of those discs I can put in and listen to from start to finish. It's great all the way through. There's an intensity to the way Stewart composes music. The bass and rhythm section are usually fairly strong and drive the momentum of the song forward in a surprising way. When you couple it with Annie's expressively animated vocals, you come up with songs that seem more like scenes from a modern day musical. The stories are interesting and timely.
The opening track sets the darker tone for the album. Using a stranger with candy metaphor for love. It's a dangerous thing that can really mess you up if you're not careful. Both 'Wrap It Up' and 'I Could Give You (A Mirror)' are favs of mine. 'Sweet Dreams' is the chart topping hit, while 'This Is The House' infuses a latin flare to the duo's sound. The final track, 'This City Never Sleeps' is a mysterious and moody piece that effectively conveys the feeling of sleeping in a big city. It soothes and settles as well as unnerves. It's a complex piece and promises a diverse subject matter from future releases. In sum, this disc is an invitation to embrace and absorb the sound of a rising power in popular music. It's a classic 80s and Eurythmics album everyone should own. If you only buy one Eurythmics disc... This is the one. My final word: ESSENTIAL.

This will be different in some ways. I'll be writing a review of an album I just got and am hearing for the first time. Here's my initial impression... The most dramatic difference between this record and my other Ingrid cd is the amount of singing. It's a huge departure from her previous disc. Ingrid is probably most famous for the song she wrote for Madonna. She wasn't given a writing credit and later sued in court for compensation for her work. The song was 'Justify My Love'. This track is a typical representation of the kind of work Ingrid does. She recites her poetry over music. It's a unique sort of rapping. One I personally find beautiful. Her first album was amazing!
My exposure to Ingrid began when she appeared opposite Prince in the movie 'Graffiti Bridge'. She later released 'May 19, 1992' on Prince's Paisley Park label. It was genius material. And another example of how progressive and artistic a label Paisley Park could be. She failed to gain Top 40 recognition with her first effort, but I was hooked. I'm a sucker for poetry and she's an incredible poet. She's beautiful with words.
This disc is completely different from 'May 19, 1992' in other ways as well. While her freshman effort focused on love and other popular sentiments, this time she's distracted by other more esoteric concerns. There's a huge preoccupation with nature and weather. She celebrates the beauty of the natural world and how interconnected nature is with human life. The instrumentation is more subdued and lacks the heavy drum and bass sound of Prince. It feels more authentic and genuine.
I've really enjoyed everything I've heard so far. Thus far, my favorite tracks have been 'The First Darshan (Song For Ameera)', 'Back Roads', 'Tightrope' and 'By The Water'. Still, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out, the entire album is quite satisfying. As much as the first was. I'm even more committed to Ingrid now.
For those of you who know Ingrid's work, you'll look forward to hearing something new. You won't be disappointed. For those of you who don't... Check her out. It's worth the time and effort. My final word: ETHEREAL.

Although this is Me'shell's 1st album, it was the second I heard. Wendy & Lisa worked on her 2nd disc and after hearing it, I immediately went and picked up this one. And I wasn't disappointed.
I've always been drawn to offbeat artists. Though there were other artists who combine rap and singing, Me'shell does it in such a smooth way. This album is urban hip hop at its best. And yet at the same time it manages to be funky, soulful and accessible. Even casual listeners could embrace this unique sound.
Lyrically, the album is extremely challenging. Ranging from topics like racism, social inequality, drug abuse and love, Me'shell presents a view not popularized by television or mainstream media. She discusses the "White Man" not from the Hollywood comedic stand point; but rather a downtrodden American struggling to survive in urban society. She celebrates her ethnicity and various aspects of the social class she grew up in. If you ever wanted to relate to people in this situation, this album puts you right in the thick of it without resorting to emotional manipulation or other tactics. You just suddenly realize this is where it's at. You're sitting on a sidewalk, listening to music playing on the ghetto blaster and absorbing the world moving around you.
Almost every track is a classic. I just put the disc in and let it play through. There are one or two songs that really catch my attention as I listen. 'I'm Diggin' You' and 'If That's Your Boyfriend', are my favorites. But I'm just as happy with the rest of the disc. Me'shell is an artist of amazing talent! Even if hip hop isn't your bag, she's someone you should pay attention to. This is perhaps the only album she's done that can neatly fit into a genre category. Each new disc takes you in a different direction. She's unpredictable and interesting. My final word: FUNKY.

I was introduced to Ryan by a friend in Las Vegas. He loved Whiskeytown (Ryan's first band), and through his appreciation, I developed a fascination with this talented and prolific songwriter. Though he's not one of those classically trained vocalists... there's a sincerity to his sound that reaches right into your soul. He's real and his voice often relaxes my heart when I'm feeling stressed or upset.
There's a thousand reasons why I bought this disc. One of which is the studio version of 'These Girls'. Previously thought to be titled, 'Hey There, Mrs. Lovely', this track circulated among collectors on various live recordings. I hate to admit it, but I find the original live takes far superior to the studio version. The lyrics seem to flow better.
Of course I intend to get all of Ryan's stuff at some point. I'm just working my way there. Most of what I own I've purchased used, but this one I bought brand new.
The first song, 'Goodnight Rose' is somewhat out of place with the rest of the disc. It's my least favorite cut. However, 'Two' comes in right after and restores my faith in Ryan's talents. "It takes two when it used to take one..." Such amazing lyrics. 'Halloweenhead' is awesome and fits perfectly after 'Everybody Knows'. I love the track. What an interesting idea. I could easily go through this entire disc and discuss the songs one by one, but there's too much to say. For an artist as prolific as Ryan (his output rivals even Prince), it's amazing how many songs are excellent quality.
My stand out favorites are 'Two', 'Oh My God, Whatever, Etc.', 'The Sun Also Sets', 'Rip Off', 'Two Hearts' and 'These Girls'. In the end you have another Ryan Adams classic release.
If you've never heard of him or listened to other alternative country artists, do yourself a huge favor and look him up. Whether you're listening to him sitting on a covered porch smoking weed in a rainstorm, or driving down the interstate through Las Vegas in a pickup truck he'll have you tapping your feet and singing along at the top of your lungs. It's all about connecting to something real; and this American songwriter is all about writing what's real. My final word: SATISFYING.

Lords Of Acid are a techno act from Belgium. They are in essence, one persona of the Praga Khan/Oliver Adams partnership. This duo is responsible for a number of electronic bands spanning the range of techno genres including jungle, house, rave, acid and trance. The Lords are perhaps the best known of all the various incarnations because of its comedic sexual themes. Most of the Lords albums have featured the vocals of Nikki Van Lierop until she left the group and was replaced on this album by Deb Ostrega.
In the grand tradition of previous albums, this one continues the blend of humorous erotica with borderline pornography. Still, it's all done in the spirit of fun and should be approached as such. Unlike previous discs, this particular album embraces more traditional instruments in addition to the endless supply of electronic sounds Khan and Adams seem to have at their fingertips. With a number of catchy, memorable tunes; 'Farstucker' assures us the Lords are still in control.
The disc was released in 3 editions. Jumping on the bandwagon to capitalize on record sales, the Lords contracted 2 special editions each including a different bonus track. I bought the Best Buy edition. It includes a track not listed on the tracklist called 'Get Up And Jam'. The other edition includes a track called 'Venus'. I have yet to hear that song. I was extremely disappointed by this tactic and I've lost respect for groups who resort to such blatant forms of money grabbing marketing. But I guess it's true if these big chain stores weren't negotiating deals to get exclusive releases, this wouldn't be happening. So it's a double whammy.
In the meantime, you can waste some time reading the funny comments on the cover. Along with the interesting liner notes, it's a great package worth reading. If you're not uptight or bothered by sexual humor, give it a shot. LOA are masters of electronic dance beats and fun club music. My final words: NAUGHTY FUN.

I remember watching 'Bridget Jones The Edge Of Reason' and seeing the man fight between Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love' was playing in the background and I absolutely loved the song. Loved it. One day, while surfing youtube, I came across the video and became convinced this band was one of the most outrageous in current history. Shortly afterward, I bought the cd. Justin Hawkins sounds like a cross between Robert Plant and Robert Smith. Just listen to 'Friday Night'. It's a combination of 70s hard rock/80s hair band theatrics and looks/90s alternative punk feel. There's a new breed of Rock 'n' Roller out there. I'm seeing other groups with a similar sound taking classic tired sounds and updating them to create something new and interesting.
Stand out tracks on this disc include 'I Believe In A Thing Called Love', 'Stuck In A Rut', 'Friday Night' and 'Growing On Me'. For a jolly good time, listen to this cd in the company of friends!
As I hear more from this group, I'll flesh out my opinion and hopefully have some history to share. In the meantime, enjoy! My final word: HOPEFUL.

I know what you're thinking... WTF???? Truth is, when I bought this disc I was talking to a friend who was trying to sell me on Stock, Aitken & Waterman productions. I guess they're some of the most successful pop music producers in the history of British music. And the range of acts they've produced is overwhelming. I was surprised to see some of my favorite 80s bands had worked with them.
In the spirit of trying new things, I agreed to listen to a compilation of their work. He sent me a tape and I liked what I heard. That's why when I saw this disc in the used bin for only $2, I picked it up. I think I was shocked to hear the first song on the record. It had some radio airplay and was somewhat popular. But I discovered what was to be the downfall of my appreciation for Stock, Aitken & Waterman... No matter the tight arrangements and flawless production work, everything sounds the same. It's like listening to 50 groups all sounding like Wilson Phillips. I listened to the disc again to see if my first impression had changed since my initial listen and I'm convinced again I was right... The first song is wonderful, but the rest all sound like generic period pop. Disappointing is a hardly appropriate word here, because there never was a favorable opinion for them to live up to. I think on a song by song basis, these producers and their artists can produce great one off hits perfect for house and club remixing. But any band putting out an album with one hit and then a disc full of filler material.... Just doesn't deserve to survive. I don't know what happened to Stock, Aitken & Waterman or the members of Boykrazy for that matter, but obscurity waits for fluff acts that fail to inspire. I'm not even sure the one track on this disc I like it worth keeping. I'll give this disc away to anyone who writes and requests it. You pay shipping of course. My final word: BORING.
